Creation or Creator?

It has been said that Jimi Hendrix reached the peak of artistry that he attained because he sold his soul to the devil. The tragic end to his life might lead us to believe there was some truth in that rumor. But we don’t have to knowingly make deals with the devil in order to worship him as he pleases.

The Apostle Paul defined the depths to where satanic-inspired worship will descend when he penned, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. For though they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator – who is forever praised – Amen.” (Rom 1:21-25 NIV)

The question for mankind is not whether or not he is a worshipper. Everyone who steps foot on this earth will spend every moment of his or her life worshipping one thing or another. Man was created to worship and he is destined to do exactly that. It is important, therefore, that he directs that worship towards his Creator rather than created things.

The ancient English word for worship is weorthscipe. It was modified to worthship and eventually worship. Therefore “worship” incorporates the idea of “ascribed worth.” It was with this in mind that Ronald Allen and Gordon Borror wrote in Worship, “Worship is an active response to God whereby we declare His worth. . .We worship God when we ascribe Him the glory due to His name.” Therefore the Psalms declare: “Ascribe unto Jehovah, ye kindreds of the peoples, ascribe unto Jehovah glory and strength. Ascribe unto Jehovah the glory due unto his name: Bring an offering, and come into his courts.” (Ps 96:7-8 SV)

“To worship God,” Ralph P. Martin adds in Worship in the Early Church, “is to ascribe to Him supreme worth, for He alone is worthy.” Hence Robert E. Webber wrote in Common Roots, “Worship gives expression to the relationship which exists between God and His people.”

You worship something because you believe it is worth something to you. Each person chooses to worship whatever object is of the most value to him or her. It is what you spend your life worshipping that makes the difference and defines you and your faith.

According to Paul’s description above, those who turn their hearts from the supreme object of all Christian worship, the true and living God, have chosen to worship the creation rather than the Creator. It is therefore the worship of the creation rather than the Creator that defines all false worship today. To false worshippers only created things are “worth” worshipping.

To unbelievers today it is all about self-worth or the elevation of man as God. Satan chose to worship the creation by worshipping self and many do the same today. In the ancient world an entire false worship system eventually ushered out of Babylon as mankind sought to extend his reach to the heavens by gathering around the Tower of Babel. (Gen 11: 1-9) All of the worlds false religious systems stem from that very event in ancient Babylon where mankind emulated Satan in order to ascend to God. Therefore Babylonian towers have been commonly seen throughout the regions where paganism was practiced. 2

The false religious system encompassing the world that has refused to glorify the True and Living God is called pantheism, or the worship of nature. Therefore, when a pantheist traverses in the mountains to feel the soft breeze, to hear the trickling stream wandering throughout the wistful forest and to witness the majesty of God’s majestic pinnacles, he worships it. He bows to the creation. He believes that each tree, bird, rock, stream and even he is God.

Al Gore’s book, Earth in Balance, is a choice example of pantheism. While expounding on his contention that the so-called current ecological crisis is a spiritual problem he wrote, “The more deeply I search for the roots of the global environmental crisis, the more I am convinced that it is an outer manifestation of an inner crisis that is, for lack of a better word, spiritual.” “Spiritual” was defined by Gore as “the collection of values and assumptions that determine our basic understanding of how we fit into the universe.” This is nothing other than New Age thought.

Gore also forwarded the pagan concept of human god-hood by explaining that humanity is “connected” to each other and to the Earth through the “web of life.”

“This sense of being connected with all things,” explained Dean Halverson, “is the essence of what Gore means by being ‘spiritual.’ But such an understanding of ‘spiritual’ reveals how Gore’s spirituality is aimed in the wrong direction – toward the creation rather than toward the Creator. Gore is concerned more with humanity’s sense of separation from the earth than from God.”

The Christian, on the other hand, looks at that same creation and blesses and thanks God for the wonderful work He has done. He worships the Creator of it all.

The same is true for music. Pantheists worship the music and text itself or the artist that created it. The Christian acknowledges that all talent comes from God and worships God as a result.

2. Babylonian towers were rectangular and built in stages, with an ascent along each side to the top. They were places of pagan religious ceremony, always surrounded by chapels where sacred images were kept. Babylonian towers were called Zigguratu, which means peak or the highest point of a mountain. This was to represent the mountaintop where Noah offered a sacrifice to God after the Flood. (Gen 8:20) The Babylonian towers were locations for astrologers who peered into the heavens seeking spiritual revelation. As we look at the pyramids in Egypt and South America or the monasteries in the Himalayas accompanied by the idolatry and nature worship that Paul described to the Romans, we are witnessing a continuation of this deceitful religion created by Satan.
