During Times of Trouble

It should be noted at this juncture that it is common during times of political unrest or social upheaval for people to clamor to dualistic forms of mysticism for comfort and an escape from the world that seems to be antagonistic and frightening.

It was this very fear that drove the ancient Hebrews to erect a golden calf in order to return to the pagan Egyptian world even as Moses was receiving the Law from God’s mouth on Sinai. (Ex 32:1-4) During the days of the kings of the ancient Hebrews you would find the populace building their high places and worshipping the Gods of pagans when evil kings assumed the Israeli throne. (I Kings 12)

The ancient Romans turned to the mystery religions of the East during the Punic Wars when Carthage’s hero Hannibal invaded Italy and the Republic began to fade. Hence during that tumultuous period, even as their ancient religion became formalized Romans saw the rise of the worship of Cyeble the Great Mother, the cult of Isis, and varieties of Gnosticism including Zoroastrianism in their midst.

As the result of Constantine and the vast majority of the emperors that followed him, Christianity eventually flourished in the empire as the state-sanctioned religion. Yet the Roman Empire in the West fell in 476 as the barbarians sacked and burned that magnificent ancient city. The upheaval of Rome’s fall into barbaric and pagan hands dissolved the social order, peace and security that Rome provided. It was within a hundred years after that fall into political and social anarchy that, under the rule of Pope Gregory, the church completely gave itself over to the superstitions of the pagans that ruled the Western World.

And so today Americans have been caught up in the wake of the social upheaval of the ‘60s along with the threats of Communism, the fear of nuclear holocaust, terrorism and now global warming. Even as Americans witness unbridled corruption in Washington, the slow erosion of law and the complete destruction of cultural and moral traditions we see the rise of pagan superstition in America’s borders as the people of God run to the peace and security that heaven promises. Yet mysticism is the source of the social dilemma that they fear. For ‘60s paganism along with it’s Ghandi-based “all you need is love” theme is the main cause of our current social upheaval and failure to adequately deal with the military threats we are faced with. So the church finds itself running into the arms of the very cause of their panic. And even as the people of God jump into the lap of superstition these same individuals fail to do exactly what is necessary to turn the tide. This would be living righteous lives in the world while taking positive steps according to the political freedoms that they have been granted to make change.

Christianity is not an escape from the world. We have not been called to build golden calves for the purpose of appeasing pagans so that we can return to that which we have been called out of. Rather, we are called to God’s promises that can be found in God’s Word. And it is high time that Christians come down from their heavenly cloisters and out of their secluded monasteries to plant their feet firmly on terra firma and deal with the spiritual and moral dilemmas that we are faced with today. It’s time to stand on the Solid Rock rather than trusting in fables.

Christianity affords the believer a way to positively act upon the world through testimonies of righteousness and faithful prayer. The Bible is not a doorway for escapism but the words of life that bring hope, assurance and direction. “’You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.’” (Matt 5:14-16 MKJV)
