The Mighty Warrior

Ttower of babelhe notion that worship is confined to an event that unfolds the deep mysteries of God to elevate the worshipper to a higher plane of existence is nothing new. It is deep-seeded in the false Babylonian religion of Nebuchadnezzar that began at the Tower of Babel, spread throughout the ancient world and can be found in the pantheistic religions of the world today. If you look at the ancient Babylonian religion and the worldviews that came out of it such as Hinduism, Buddhism, New Age and the like, you will find that they all go back to the ancient Babylonian worship of Nimrod and his wife Semiramis who were elevated as gods in the ancient world. Alexander Hislop’s book The Two Babylons traces this very well.

NimrodMan’s rebellion at the Tower of Babel (Gen 11: 1-11) was centered on the act of man attempting to elevate himself as a god. In so doing, the ancient Babylonians built a tower that would reach into the heavens in order that they might attain their desired goal of god-hood. This rebellious event in history gave rise to Nimrod who was the “mighty warrior on the earth.” He was the one who first subjugated people to tyrannical control. Justin wrote of Ninus (Nimrod): "He was the first who carried on war against his neighbors." Diodorus defined Ninus (Nimrod) as "the most ancient of the Assyrian kings.” His kingdom spread throughout the known world including Babylon and many other cities. The conqueror Ninus (Nimrod), according to Justin, "subdued all nations, as far as Lybia." This powerful warrior was known as "The Huntsman," or god of the chase. He eventually created the Assyrian Empire. (Gen 9: 8-12)

The Assyrians were a mean lot who were the first to develop iron weapons which allowed them to rule the earth and spread their demonic pagan religion everywhere they traversed. “So it came about,” wrote Augustine, “that all the peoples and kings of those lands were brought under Assyria's imperial domination and obediently did as they were told.”

Augustine also noted, “It was in Assyria, then, that the domination of the godless city was at its height. The capitol was Babylon -- the best of all names for the city of the earth-born, since Babylon means ‘confusion’.”

It was during this time that the worship of men as gods began to take its foothold in the world. For Babylon’s overlords, Nimrod and his wife, were ultimately elevated as gods and a vast religion ushered out of it that now envelops the much of the world. Hence Nimrod shows up time and time again throughout history as he is revealed in pagan religious systems. For example, the god Neptune, who was also regarded as the "god of hidden councils," or the "concealer of secrets," was looked up to as a patron of horsemanship, and was said to have produced the horse. This god was the shadow of Nimrod in the ancient Roman culture.

Ironically it was out of the Chaldean Empire produced by Nimrod that Abraham was called to form a new nation dedicated to worshipping the true and living God. (Gen 12) The God of Abraham promised a Savior of mankind. Jesus was the fulfillment of this and He suffered death to save men from their sins.

In contrast, the pagans lifted up Nimrod as their savior who would save them through the might of his sword. In the Hindu religion, Nimrod, the mediator can be seen in the god, Agni. "On the macrocosmic scale," wrote R.C. Zaehner of Agni in Hinduism, "he surpasses all things in greatness, on the microcosmic scale he is the friend and kinsman of men. . .born in heaven he descends on to earth; born again on earth he, as the mouth of the gods, devours the oblation and, as priest, brings down the gods to share in sacrificial feast. He is the meeting-place of gods and men and the bond of union between them. . ."

Darth VaderConsider the Jedi over whom it was promised would bring “Balance to the Force” in the movie Star Wars and you will see a modern depiction of this ideal pagan savior. Because of its popularity, the movie Star Wars has had a tremendous impact on furthering pagan superstition in America. “I was trying to say in a very simple way, knowing that the film was made for a young audience,” producer George Lucas admitted, “that there is a God and there is both a good side and a bad side.” His biography detailed that “Lucas wanted to instill in children a belief in a Supreme Being . . . a universal deity that he named the Force, a cosmic energy source that incorporates and consumes all living things.” Lucas indicated that he got his ideas from Carlos Castaneda’s Tales of Power, which depicted a sorcerer who speaks of a “life force.” Hence the hullabaloo encircling the saving work of Darth Vader who brought balance to the force when he eventually destroyed the emperor goes back to the worship of Nimrod.

Ultimately the personage of Nimrod stands out in the Bible as the antichrist who will one day promise salvation through coercion rather than “the Force” as he builds the world’s last kingdom. (Rev 13)

SemiramisNimrod’s wife, Semiramis, was elevated as a goddess. Juno was the Roman name for the Babylonian "Queen of Heaven." This queen who has been worshipped throughout the world was, according to the historian Herodotus, "The greatest and most worshipped of all divinities."

Semiramis was known in Egyptian culture as Isis and her statues could be seen all over the ancient Roman Empire. She is represented in the Cult of Cybele where she is called the Great Mother. She is the “Mother Earth” who is talked so much about and ultimately the whore of Babylon, whose destruction is foretold in John’s revelation of future events. (Rev 17-18)

The Scriptures provide us with an account of how the women of Israel submitted themselves to apostasy in their worship of the goddess Semiramis. They proclaimed: “’When we burned incense to the Queen of Heaven and poured out drink offerings to her, did not our own husbands know that we were making cakes in her image and pouring out drink offerings to her?’. . .You and your wives have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled with your hands, saying, ‘We will surely keep our vows that we have made, to burn incense to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.’" (Jer 44:19b, 25 NIV)

Later, during the era of the Early Church the Queen of Heaven, under the name of Sophia, appeared amongst the Gnostics who sought to pervert Christianity with their mysteries. She promised liberation and freedom to those who were tired of the male God of the Bible. She also promised wisdom beyond that which could be found in biblical Proverbs.

And now the Queen of Heaven has returned to make herself well known in our contemporary churches. “Though She never left, the Goddess is returning to you,” writes Lazarius in Concept: Synergy. “. . .and She brings a light. . .Yours is the great work: Receiving and then bringing Her light into a seemingly darkening world. She is returning to you and She brings gifts and treasures that are bountiful and without limit. . .As She returns, you can come to know the Goddess and you can know God.”

As promoted by the feminist movement while still coming under the name of Sophia, she is the new goddess for the New World. Caitlin Matthews, an ordained Isis priestess, in Sophia, Goddess of Wisdom, identifies this new goddess with the ancient Egyptian idol: “Sophia appears in nearly every culture,” and “the connections between Isis and Sophia are very significant and show us Sophia’s strongest links to the ancient Goddess tradition.”

Sophia is being called on to give birth to the New Humanity as “Christ Herself.” Sister Madonna Kolbenschlag, who is an ex-nun and militant feminist in the Catholic Church, sees this new goddess movement as a “stage, necessary for some, in an evolutionary process that is moving humanity – and the ‘God-who-is-coming-to-be’ – toward transformation in a ‘New Faith.’” The Re-imagining Conference organized by mainline Christian feminists proclaimed in the program literature: “Sophia’s voice has been silenced for too long. Let her speak and bless us throughout these days.”

Just as in ancient times, this female deity is pictured as the mother of God: “Although . . . he (Jaweh) refers to himself in the plural form. . . (he) remind(s) us inadvertedly, of the goddess and the earth from which he came.”

A well-know goddess worshipper, Miriam Starhawk elaborated, “Mother Goddess is reawakening and we can begin to recover our primal birthright, the sheer intoxicating joy of being alive. We can open our eyes and see that there is nothing to be saved from . . . no God outside the world to be feared and obeyed.”

In Asphodel P. Long’s Restoring the Goddess of Judaism and Christianity, the continued quest after the Queen of Heaven was unearthed: “She (is) . . .everywhere and encompasses everything: . . . She is everything and everybody and its opposite.”

Semiramis and child NimrodNimrod and Semiramis have been worshiped through the ages as co-gods. Ancient Babylonian mythology told that Nimrod was both the husband and son of their fabled Queen. It was believed that after Nimrod died, he was resurrected through reincarnation as a baby in the arms of Semiramis. In Greece, there was a child worshipped in the arms of the Great Mother of Greece. This child was Dionysus, Icchus, or Baccus who was held in the arms of Ceres. In Egypt, Ceres went by the name of Isis, while Baccus was represented by Osiris. It was in Egypt where Osiris (or Nimrod) was represented as a child in his mother's arms. So, he was called "The son, the husband of his mother." Later the church of the middle ages adopted this cult into Christian culture to depict Semiramis and Nimrod as the Madonna and child.

Alexander Hislop in his book The Two Babylons wrote, "All tradition from the earliest times bears testimony to the Apostasy of Nimrod, and to his success in leading men away from the patriarchal faith, and the delivering their minds from that awe of God and the fear of the judgments of heaven that must have rested on them while yet the memory of the flood was recent. And according to all the principles of depraved human nature, this too, no doubt, was one grand element of his fame; for men will readily rally around anyone who can give them the least appearance of plausibility to any doctrine which will teach that they can be assured of happiness and heaven at last, though their hearts and natures are unchanged, and though they live without God in the world."
